The huge collection allows a comprehensive overview of the various stylistic developments and schools of Japanese painting during the middle and late Edo period (1603 - 1868) and early Meiji era (1868-1912) including also some Buddhist and religious paintings from earlier period. Erwin von Baelz had been appointed 1876 as Professor for Internal Medicine at the later Imperial University of Tôkyô where he teached until 1902 when he left his post.
