The Trumpf Collection, now held by the Lindenmuseum Stuttgart, is one of the most important netsuke collections in Europe. The collection\'s 848 objects, the sum of decades of collecting by Anna and Christian Trumpf, provide an unique overview of this Japanese art form of sash toggles during its greatest flowering from the late seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century. Offering a sheer endless variety of motifs, they dazzle with their masterly execution and high artistic quality. Carved from coral, tortoise-shell, rare wood or ivory, they depict animals, plants, deities, mythical beings and human figures performing every imaginable kind of activity of everyday\'s life.
The collection is published in a two-volume monograph in full colour, volume one describes in English and German 112 masterpieces, the second volume, in German, presents the complete Trumpf Collection and 34 pieces from the old Lindenmuseum collection, in total 848 netsuke, covering the period from the late 17th up to the mid-20th century. These two volumes will become essential references for collectors and connoisseurs of netsuke.
